Born in Nubra Valley near the Indo-Chinese border, Abdul Rashid is a passionate Ladakhi naturalist with over two decades of hands-on experience in the high-altitude wilderness of the Trans-Himalayas.
Abdul Rashid is widely recognized as one of Ladakh’s most knowledgeable snow leopard specialists, mountaineers, photographers, and filmmakers. His deep-rooted connection to the rugged landscapes of Hemis National Park and surrounding valleys allows him to offer unparalleled insights into the behavior of the elusive Ghost of the Mountains (Snow Leopard), as well as other iconic Himalayan species including Eurasian Lynx, Pallas’s Cat, Tibetan Wolf, Himalayan Ibex, and Himalayan Brown Bear.
A skilled mountaineer who has summited numerous peaks above 7,000 meters (including Nun Kun, Saser Kangri, Chamser, and Stok Kangri), Rashid trained at the prestigious Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi in 2000. He brings the same discipline, safety standards, and search-and-rescue expertise to his wildlife expeditions. In 2009, he founded Elite Expedition India, a premium wildlife tourism company dedicated to responsible, high-end expeditions in Ladakh and beyond.
His expertise has earned the trust of international film crews and publications. Rashid has contributed as a field guide, tracker, and photographer for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and other global media projects. He is also a passionate conservationist and wildlife photographer who documents the beauty of the Himalayas through his lens.
Through Elite Expedition India, Abdul Rashid organizes exclusive snow leopard and wildlife expeditions with a strong focus on ethical tourism and community involvement.
With decades of field experience and intimate knowledge of animal behavior and habitat, Rashid and his team of local Ladakhi trackers maintain a 100% success rate in sightings. He personally leads many expeditions and spends most of his time in the mountains.
Rashid donates a significant portion of profits (around 20%) to wildlife conservation initiatives — including building predator-proof corrals, feral dog sterilization programs, employing local villagers, and educating communities to reduce human-wildlife conflict. His efforts have been recognized by state and local bodies.
Proficient in 8 languages, Rashid ensures every guest feels at home. His expeditions combine world-class wildlife viewing with genuine cultural insights and responsible tourism practices.
Abdul Rashid personally leads most expeditions, ensuring every journey benefits from his unmatched field experience, deep understanding of wildlife behavior, and real-time decision-making in the mountains. His team is equipped with high-quality optics, binoculars, and radios to maximize sightings, while each guest is provided with dedicated spotting scopes for a more immersive and rewarding wildlife experience.
Rather than operating high-volume tours, Rashid offers a limited number of carefully selected expeditions each season. This approach allows for a more focused, low-impact wildlife experience while maintaining high success rates, personalized attention, and minimal disturbance to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
