Altitude Information

Acclimatisation is essential and life-saving for any journey to Ladakh. Located in the high Himalayas, Ladakh sits at extreme altitudes where oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. Leh, the main entry point for most travellers, is situated at approximately 3,600 meters (11,500 ft), making proper acclimatisation crucial before moving to higher regions.

Without adequate acclimatisation, travellers may experience Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), with symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. In severe cases, AMS can develop into life-threatening conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).

To ensure safety, the Leh District Administration enforces a mandatory 48-hour rest period for all visitors arriving by air. This allows your body to gradually adjust to the altitude and reduces the risk of altitude-related illness. Skipping this crucial phase can significantly impact your overall experience and health during the expedition.

Important Acclimatisation Guidelines:

  • Take complete rest on your first day in Leh and avoid any physical exertion.
  • Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily to stay well hydrated.
  • Avoid climbing stairs, long walks, or any strenuous activity during the initial days.
  • Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption for at least the first 48 hours.
  • Consume light, easily digestible meals and maintain a high-carbohydrate diet.
  • Preventive medication such as Diamox (Acetazolamide) may help, but should only be taken after consulting a doctor.
  • Immediately inform your guide, hotel staff, or travel companion if you feel unwell or notice any symptoms.

Proper acclimatisation ensures a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience in Ladakh, allowing you to fully focus on the wildlife, landscapes, and unique cultural encounters this expedition has to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Premium snow leopard expedition and Classic / normal snow leopard expedition ?
The primary difference is that a Premium Expedition is a highly luxurious, private, and fast-paced expedition, whereas a Classic Expedition is a basic, group-oriented trek. In a premium tour, you receive elite, individual attention with your own dedicated naturalist, an exclusive backup tracking car, and personal spotters using a dedicated high-end spotting scope just for you. Instead of enduring standard rooms , community home stays, you stay in the finest heated luxury rooms with warm bathrooms inside the wildlife habitat, complemented by five-star hotel stays in Delhi and Leh. Your daily tracking is elevated by curated cultural experiences—like privileged access to local homes for private tea—alongside luxury outdoor lunch setups, specialized birding days, and a dedicated search for the rare Eurasian Lynx. In contrast, a classic expedition requires you to share trackers, vehicles, and scopes with a large group.
Why choose November to January for premium snow leopard Expedition ?
Choosing mid-November to mid-January for a premium snow leopard expedition guarantees an exclusive, uncrowded wildlife safari free from the mass tourism of later months. While standard tourism heavily promotes February and March as the peak season, a decade of expert tracking experience has proven this assumption to be a myth. In reality, the early winter window from November to January consistently delivers superior, high-quality snow leopard sightings overall, as the mountain valleys are completely quiet. By traveling during these peaceful months, premium guests can track these elusive cats in total solitude, ensuring that your dedicated spotters, private vehicles, and high-end tracking scopes face no crowd interference or visual disruption from other tour groups.
How many optics/ scopes provided for premium snow leopard expedition ?
Unlike standard tour companies that provide only one or two shared low quality scopes for an entire group—causing guests to completely miss brief, fleeting sightings—this premium expedition operates on a strict 1:1 ratio. Every single guest is equipped with their own dedicated, top-tier Swarovski BTX spotting scope, premium binoculars, a heavy-duty tripod, and a fluid pan head. This individual setup guarantees that you will never have to wait in line or rush to share equipment, ensuring you can instantly lock onto and comfortably view the snow leopard the exact moment it appears.
How many guest will be in the group ?
To ensure an exclusive and comfortable wildlife safari, the premium expedition strictly limits the group size to a maximum of 5 guests in total. To provide the highest level of comfort, the tour restricts occupancy to a maximum of three people per vehicle. This ensures that every single guest is guaranteed a window seat for unobstructed viewing, while leaving ample, stress-free space inside the car to safely store and access your heavy camera gear, telephoto lenses, and tracking equipment.
Will there be a potter to carry camera equipment and day bag while on snow leopard tracking days ?
Yes, every single guest on this premium expedition will have their own dedicated porter to carry all camera equipment, heavy tripods, and day bags, allowing you to walk completely hands-free and without any physical load. Because the snow leopard habitat sits at an extreme altitude of 3,700 to 4,400 metres above sea level, walking through the valleys is significantly more difficult and exhausting than walking at sea level due to the thin mountain air. Having a personal porter eliminates physical strain, saves your energy, and makes your tracking days immensely easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
What age group is good for this trip ?
This trip is perfectly suitable for travelers of any age group, up to 85 years old, provided you are in decent physical health. Because the premium expedition is designed for maximum comfort, most snow leopard sightings happen in areas that are directly accessible by vehicle, eliminating the need for strenuous, long-distance trekking. While minor walking may occasionally be required to secure a clearer or closer vantage point, the expert tracking team will handle all the logistics and guide you safely to the best possible spot to view and photograph the wildlife without overexerting yourself.
What will be the medical emergencies on this expedition ?
For medical emergencies, the premium expedition is fully equipped with comprehensive first-aid medical kits and portable oxygen cylinders available at all times inside the vehicles, hotel rooms, and wildlife lodges. In the rare event of a more serious medical issue, the tour provides an immediate doctor-on-call service for instant professional advice. If urgent hospitalization is required, a dedicated emergency backup vehicle is always on standby to quickly transfer you to the main hospital in Leh, which is a manageable one-hour drive from the primary snow leopard habitat.
What other wildlife we can see apart from snow leopard with this expedition ?
Apart from the elusive snow leopard, this premium expedition offers incredible opportunities to spot rare high-altitude predators like the Tibetan wolf, Eurasian lynx, and red fox, along with majestic wild herbivores like blue sheep (bharal) and Asiatic ibex. The skies and cliffs are dominated by magnificent birds of prey, including the golden eagle, bearded vulture (lammergeier), and Himalayan griffon vulture. Additionally, the habitat is a haven for birdwatchers, giving you the chance to see rare and endangered avian species such as the white-browed tit-warbler, solitary snipe and Himalayan snow-cock.
What are the chances of snow leopard sighting ?
While wild animal sightings can never be strictly promised at 100% due to the snow leopard's legendary camouflage, extreme elusiveness, and mysterious behavior. Our premium tour currently maintains a flawless 100% sighting success record. Thanks to our expert local tracking team's decade of experience and the top-tier Swarovski optics provided individually to every guest, every single traveler who has ever joined us has successfully spotted, viewed, and photographed a wild snow leopard.
How close will I get to a snow leopard ?
Snow leopard sightings usually happen at a distance of 300 to 600 metres, sometimes even further—due to the wide, open valley terrain. However, you can experience much closer sightings if a snow leopard is found near a fresh hunt or kill site. In those special moments the expert tracking team will safely guide you as close as 100 to 200 metres away, ensuring you get spectacular views and photographs while strictly keeping enough distance so the animal is never disturbed or stressed.
How cold does it actually get while on snow leopard expedition ?
During the early winter months of a premium expedition, daytime temperatures in the mountain valleys usually hover between -5°C and -10°C under the sun. However, once the sun sets or if you are tracking in the shade, the temperatures plunge rapidly, with night-time temperatures regularly dropping between -15°C and -20°C. Because you will be sitting or standing still at high altitudes for long periods while viewing the wildlife, the wind chill can make it feel significantly colder than the actual thermometer reading.
What are the clothing essentials for this tour ?
For a snow leopard expedition, you must follow a strict four-layer clothing system to stay warm while sitting still in sub-zero cold. Start with a heavy-weight thermal base layer (top and bottom) that wicks away sweat, followed by a thick fleece mid-layer, a windproof and waterproof jacket and a premium down jacket rated for -20°C or lower. For your lower body, wear fleece-lined, windproof snow pants over your thermals. Complete your gear with deeply insulated winter boots (like Sorel or Baffin) rated for extreme cold, two layers of moisture-wicking wool socks, a fleece balaclava to cover your face, heavy windproof gloves paired with thin inner glove liners, and several chemical hand and toe warmers to place inside your gear. Click to know more about what to pack.
What photography gear do I need for snow leopard expedition ?
For high-quality wildlife photography, you should bring a full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera body that handles low-light conditions well. Your main lens must be a powerful telephoto lens of 600mm or longer or at least a 400mm lens paired with a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter to give you the extra reach needed for far-off ridge lines. Because sub-zero mountain temperatures drain electronics rapidly, it is crucial to pack multiple spare batteries and keep them warm inside your inner coat pockets close to your body heat. Finally, a heavy-duty tripod equipped with a smooth fluid gimbal head is absolutely essential to hold your heavy setup completely steady against strong mountain winds. We have camera, tele lens and tripods for rent. Please click to know more options for rental from us.
How far is snow leopard habitat or area from Leh town ?
Ladakh offers the easiest and fastest access to wild snow leopard habitats anywhere in the world. From Leh town, you can reach the entry points of Hemis National Park in just a one-hour drive. If your expedition is based in other good habitat tracking valleys like Ulley or Mangue, it takes a short two-hour drive along well-connected mountain roads to get from your hotel in Leh directly into prime wildlife territory.
How much walking during snow leopard tracking days ?
Walking on snow leopard tracking days is very manageable as vehicles can reach almost all the main habitat areas across Ladakh. You will mostly be scanning for wildlife right from or near the car- however, you may occasionally need to walk for about 30 minutes or do a short gentle climb to reach elevated vantage points for a clearer view. Whenever a short walk is required, our expert tracking team will walk right beside you, assisting you every step of the way to ensure you reach the best possible spot to safely view and photograph the snow leopards.
